‘Sonic Frontiers’ review: A frustrating hedgehog hellscape

Sega brought back some of the original Sonic staffers and modern 2D Sonic game developer Dimps to make some new games that follow the acclaimed original games. Episode 1 is fine, but if you have to play one of the episodes of Sonic 4, the second episode is the way to go. Stealth and Taxman were commissioned to bring this classic Sonic game to Android as well, updating the iOS version in the process.

That’s not to say racing through these levels came without issues, as the developers have always had to wrangle a camera that could keep up with Sonic without either leaving him stuck on scenery or, worse, falling through the level. The new homing spin attack also had its quirks, too; you might not necessarily have locked onto an enemy in the way you wanted, or you could end up just spinning around them for an indefinite period of time. I hope that we get past a point where “gameplay is king” and other things like pure character appeal aren’t considered inherent to what makes a game great Play Sonic Games Online – Emulator Games Online.

With that said, though, it’s hard to argue that Sonic as a franchise was never better than when the games were all 2D. After all, the 3D Sonic games have ranged anywhere from incredible to abysmal. Meanwhile, while not every 2D Sonic title is a masterpiece, almost none of these games are objectively bad. Way back when, Sega’s flagship mascot was arguably the hottest thing in gaming. His design was fairly simple yet effective, he had personality, and his 2D side-scrolling games were incredibly fun. Atrocious camera angles lead to cheap deaths, the slippery controls make it difficult to get a handle on the characters and the game has a large problem with pacing.

• There’s been a lot of discourse over Frontiers, from its criticized first preview to its better-received second preview but after playing the game, I can safely say that it’s good, in fact, it’s very good.
• You can stream your collection of PC games from your GameStream-compatible PC to any supported device and play them remotely.
• It still has some features that haven’t aged well, and the writing is still relatively simplistic.
• Most of the excitement around the hedgehog these days is tied to his 2D outings; look at the excellent fan-developed Sonic Mania, and Sonic Origins (though this could be the start of Sonic’s 2D decline… again).

Every time I tried Jam it felt weird or different to play, don’t know why. The music issue in 3 sucks, but it’s out of their control. Once it’s patched it may very well be perfect, but even with some of the bugs, it’s a lovingly crafted collection. Mega Collection and Mega Collection+ were pretty great thanks to the additional games but I always felt the emulation wasn’t as good as the Saturn ports inside Sonic Jam. It will be Sonic Origins once they fix the issues highlighted in the Digital Foundry video and any others raised by the general Sonic community.

Unfortunately, those too are marred by Sonic’s poor momentum, which feels even worse in smaller spaces where players are supposed to constantly boost and go as fast as possible. On the miniboss front, players can defeat some very quickly while others are five-plus minute fights. Coupled with the lackluster physics, it’s rare to ever get into Sonic Frontiers’open-world flow. This game, despite its good intentions, is a horrible, broken, unfinished mess.

This is obviously a problem if you don’t like the other two-thirds of the game. So you just have to suffer through those parts if you’re not interested in them. Equipment is the most useless addition with items being a close second. You do not need to spend money–rings, in this case–to buy any of the equipment because it does nothing to increase the strength of your characters. They increase your stats, but by a single, measly point.

The screen stayed black for about 10 seconds or more, then it showed the typical level title thing, except the simplistic shapes were different shades of red and the text showed only «HILL, ACT 1». The screen faded in and the level title vanished revealing Tails in the Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1, the music was different though, it sounded like a peaceful melody in reverse.
